Texas Coastal Bend tour guide Fall 2015 57 Padre IslandFlour Bluff grilled yellowfin tuna laguna reef Laguna Reef Locals discovered this Flour Bluff seafood house shortly after it opened but its re- mote location has kept it something of a hidden gem for most visitors to the Coastal Bend except for fishermen heading into the waters of Upper Laguna Madre and Baffin Bay. Laguna Reef is located at Bluffs Landing Marina on the far southern end of Laguna Shores Road and has earned a reputation as a home of culinary creativity and skill with the tender bounty of the sea. For this food snob crab cakes and whole floundereach served as occasional specials at Laguna Reefare the real test for seafood cooking because the chef is dealing with products that fully take on the spices and flavors to which they are exposed not to mention the complex cleaning and preparation work involved. High quality standards permeate to all recipes on the menu which includes just about every imaginable incarnation of grilled broiled and fried seafood many with a Cajun touch. Laguna Reef will cook your freshly caught and cleaned fish filets. 4242 Laguna Shores Rd. Bluffs Landing Marina 361 937-2600 Island Joes This welcome addition to the Padre Island food scene opened recently at the Board- walk Center just over the JFK Bridge. This warmly decorated espresso based coffee shop showcases photography by Bryan Tumlinson several items of which are avail- able for sale. The owners have created a cool place for islanders and visitors to relax and enjoy a hot or cold beverage and a pastry in an inviting family friendly setting. Island Joes will host live music on weekends open-mic nights game and movie nights starting this fall. A percentage of Island Joes sales goes toward hunger relief programs which the owners operate in the Dominican Republic 13919 S. Padre Island Dr. on Padre Island 361 867-1276 Brooklyn Pie Co. For New Yorkers pizza can be something of a religiontheres one way to do it and only one place where you can get it. The style of pizza is thin and crispy the test of authenticity has to do with folding your slice and it not droopingand when New York style pizza is sold by the slice its a GIANT slice that easily suffices as ones lunch. This is what you find at Brooklyn Pie Co. a concept that was perfected in Austin and that opened on North Padre Island late last year. New Yorkers say that the pizza here is as close to what you find in the Big Apple and locals are catching on to the flavor and quality that is achieved by using the freshest high quality ingredients and by making dough and sauces from scratch every day.
