Jennifer Lopez burst onto the entertainment scene in her near-perfect portrayal of the Queen of Tejano, and her rise to international stardom that started in a working class Corpus Christi neighbor- hood. Though her life was cut short at just 23, Selena has inspired millions to never give up on their dreams. August Evening (2007) is an acclaimed Spanish-language film that tells the story of an aging undocumented farm worker from Mexico whose son dies suddenly, leaving his daughter-in-law in need of support and companion- ship. It was filmed in Central and South Texas, including Corpus Christi. Pearl Harbor (2001) is the highest- grossing film to have been filmed, in part, in Corpus Christi. Scenes taking place on a Japanese aircraft carrier were ironically filmed aboard the U.S.S. Lexington. A local, independent film called Mirror, created by Christopher Ambriz, is a psychological-horror flick released in 2017, and seeking distribu- tion. Windmills in San Patricio County are much of the backdrop to Bad Turn Worse (2013), which is about three teens who inadvertently steal from the mob. The Doctor’s Prison Cell (2016) is a docudrama about human rights abuses against Croatians in the 1990’s Balkan War. TAMUCC professor Dr. Dorothy McClellan wrote the screen- play and prison scenes were recreated, with students as actors, in the brig of the U.S.S. Lexington.
