86 THE COASTAL BEND MAGAZINE • Winter 2018-19 TheCoastalBend.com While Port A is known across the country for its bountiful offshore game fishing, onshore fishing is among the best on the Texas coast as well. Surf fishing is, of course, accessible from almost any- where on the beach, but is more practical in the early mornings, before the beach crowds arrive, during a busy period like Spring Break. Horace Caldwell Pier is located on the Port Aransas beach at the I.B. Magee Nueces County Park, and extends 1,200 feet into gulf waters. The pier facility includes a cafe and bait shop, and is as popular with surfers as it is with fishermen, who pull in redfish, drum, shark, and a variety of other native species. The Port Aransas Jetties form the underwater structure that creates the ship channel, which runs between them. The south jetty is located in Port A, at the north end of the beach. The north jetty is located on St. Joseph Island (“St. Jo’s), which is accessible via the privately-run Jetty Boat, operat- ing from Fisherman’s Wharf. Both jetties offer free access to the unique, rocky underwater habitat that is home to a unique variety of fish. Terrific Shore Fishing in Port A
