36 Texas Coastal Bend tour guide Early Spring 2016 Port Aransas Port Aransas the Top Texas Spring Break Family Destination O ver the course of a decade from the mid-70s to the mid-80s Port Aransas became increas- ingly known as the South Texas party capital for college students and other young adults on Spring Break. From 1980 or so each successive year in Port A saw more kids half or more from the local area packing the beach in long lines of parked and moving vehicles and each year it seemed the scene became just a bit rowdier and teetering on the edge of chaos. In 1986 the Port Aransas Spring Break party scene reached its boiling point when a minor car accident on the beach escalated into a full-fledged alcohol-fueled riot complete with burning cars and bathroom structures hundreds of police and even a Coast Guard cutter positioned close offshorepresumably in case someone decided to swim for it. After the Great Riot of 86 town leaders made the decision that Port Aransas would no longer promote itself as a Spring Break party destination and the hotels and condominiums would enforce stricter rental
